Brithish Columbia … sounds like me after a few drinks

In Brithish Stumblebumbia, on my third …

If it was not for INACHI all inspectors would be in the same boat as they are in BC. For another organization to start is just going to make things more confusing for the government. They like things in neat tidy packets. They do not like to deal with a bunch of organizations that all want something different for the same industry.
As a sitting member of the advisory committee studying the need for regulation of the home inspection business in Alberta I can tell you that any new organizations will likely not be recognized. Individual inspectors will have an opportunity to present their positions when and if the committee’s recommendations go to public hearings.
I was asked by the government to represent the independent inspectors but since I had no input from them and had no way of obtaining that information without personal cost to me I did not feel that I could provide any input on their behalf, and still do my duty to INACHI. These things cost time and money and if you are not prepared to cover that cost then you are on your own.
All you independent inspectors owe INACHI a debt for preventing the BC senerio. The BC thing can still happen here in Alberta if we drop our guard.
**If you want to keep your freedom you must defend it. **

The bridge for independent inspectors is National Certification. The way iNACHI could help this is to gain equivalency (this would mean that the certification authority understands the standards that the organization has established and views them as equivalent to the ones laid out in the National Standards.)

If you could do this in Alberta it would help iNACHI members across Canada.

Perhaps to carry that one step further - to gain equivalency would mean that we all agree on the basic understanding of accepting one “National Standard”, rather than trying to trying to recreate it. If it is deemed acceptable to CMHC and other stakeholders - one needs to consider why are some trying to reinvent the wheel?

I fact, I personally see that even those that perceive that they are paying more to apply to the National Certification Program actually come out ahead in the long run, when you factor in membership fees in some associations. Do a little research and number crunching and the facts are there.

More about this later.

BTW: Nice looking newsletter - congrats!
Cheers, Claude

Perhaps as an exchange - I also offer you to take a look at another newsletter from FNNBOA - First Nations National Building Officers Association.

It offers another perspective on the world of home inspections.

"I was asked by the government to represent the independent inspectors but since I had no input from them and had no way of obtaining that information without personal cost to me I did not feel that I could provide any input on their behalf, and still do my duty to INACHI."

Well Vern that pretty well sums up the problem. No inspector who is not a member of one of the major inspection organizations has ever been asked what they think or what they want. The estimated 70% of unheard inspectors deserve to have a voice in any developments made that will affect their businesses. That short coming is exactly what the C.F.I.H.I intends to correct. Many of the major players may not like the temerity of the ‘silent majority’ suddenly wanting to be heard but it must be understood that the politicians work for and answer to us too. We do not intend to supplant any other organization or step on any toes. But we do intend to be represented.
