Can anyone tell me what this is and tell me if it is a defect?

You are citing that not me. I was there and the bored hole was not in the required space. Measurements are from the edge of a hole not the center (NC).

Apparently you are not paying attention as to who is throwing the insults. Not Chuck is a reference to him not being in Ohio. I will continue to defend myself and my arguments.

Michael, in a way I can see where you are coming from - with regards to Texas and Ohio. Each to his own man. Chuck Evans and I are not what you would call friends. With that being said … On my end, I have nothing but a high level of respect for the man and for good reason.

Defending yourself is both good and bad, depending on how and when you handle it. Let’s say that you have been taken to court and this State’s Attorney is bad mouthing you to no end. Nothing he says is true and he is running you into the ground and everyone knows it (even the judge). You get madder and madder with each false statement that he makes about you and suddenly you are pissed with tunnel vision. You say: “Let me tell you 1 thing” and then the judge orders the balif to remove you from the courtroom and then the judge rules against you, because you took matters into your own hands.

I’m just saying that maybe if you could talk a little more cautiously thinking that Chuck is the State’s Attorney then you might be able to get your point across, with better ending results.

Who knows either 1 of us? Now who knows Chuck and Larry? Everyone - there was even a movie made about Chuck and Larry. Pretty much everyone (especially long time members) are going to have Chuck’s back.

You do your thing man and be who you are. I have seen a lot of people like you come and go over the years, but Chuck Evans and Larry Kage are not going anywhere. They are very knowledgeable in many areas and for that, you have to give them respect.

Wishing you the best Michael. Stay safe.

Well said Michael. BTW-how did the conversation change from a question about an electrical service panel to a discussion about holes bored in a joist?

I’m glad to see the original question at least was answered before all this crap started… if you’re going to bicker between you, at least do it on your own post.

Hey Michael. I’ve been skimming through your Safe Home book and finding some good stuff in there. Can I steal anything from it or is it copyrighted?

Scott, go ahead man. I don’t recall where Nick has it but every InterNACHI member has access to their very own safe home book. He is a busy man but even took time to talk to me 1st thing in the morning. Here is how I always reach him. It’s funny almost the time I got send, he replies to my e-mail.

WAFI ALERT

WHOOP WHOOOP WHOOOOP:crazy_face:

Just found it! It’s a free download on the Inspector Outlet page. I should’ve known that! Thank you sir!

Unfortunately, home inspectors are notorious for using improper electrical terminology.

I don’t see either “double-lugged” or “double-tapped” in the NEC definitions, so what’s the source for your definitions?

I’ve looked at the image and diagram you provided. Could you please clarify for me? As I think I understand what you’re saying, the hole must be located 2 inches above the bottom of the framing member, measured from the bottom of the hole. If that is the case, I follow to that point. However, I’m confused when you talk about the bored hole is not in “the required space”? Could you please explain to me how you determine/calculate/measure that space? Thanks.

There is a common thread to many of these threads. Goes like this:

Some Guy: “What do you guys think of this? Is this wrong? blah blah blah”

Another Guy: “Yes, that is incorrect” (no justification or reason given why, therefore only partially useful)

A Wizened CMI: “If you’d taken the time to research xxx you’d know. You have no business in the
inspection business”

First Guy (now slightly irate, sarcastic): “Well, thanks for the useful info”

Another CMI: "You’re an idiot "

Yet Another CMI: “you should listen to Wizened CMI. He knows what he’s talking about. You don’t”

And on it goes. Every thread. Here are some suggestions to everyone:

  1. Keep all personal judgmental statements completely out of the posts, or don’t post at all. Life is about biting your tongue. Do you talk this way to clients? To agents? To your family?
Do 80% of the post-ers deserve a dressing-down because of stupidity, ignorance, laziness, or just general dumb-assery? Yes they do. But a professional keeps it in check, answers the dang question, and moves on. If the ass-hattery persists on the part of the original poster, maybe then it’s time to politely, but firmly, suggest hitting the books, etc.

  2. Just answer the damn question. Wizened CMIs, take the time to explain and teach. What is the little grey box and exactly why is it installed incorrectly? The mantle of “experienced” or “CMI” comes with the responsibility to instruct, to better others, to improve the industry…one moron at a time.

Yes, the guy probably should know the answer if he’s an inspector. Yes, the guy could figure this out on his own. Yeah, 20 other threads talked about this. Yes, he’s wasting your time. So, if you don’t have the time, don’t respond.

In this case, no training I’ve ever seen outside of electrician instruction talks about a surge protector.
So here’s one: it requires breakers. What amperage?

I should have just left that out .

That is how inspectors claim that they are not citing code. If you make up a term that is not in the NEC then you can’t be citing code.

Its a poor argument that would not hold up in court.

Todd,
Great POST,
I have been doing home inspections for 13 years and yes there are a lot of issues that I come across that I have to research or go on a forum to find the answers but I don’t want to be bullied or belittled by some asshole who cant just answer the questions. Geeez

200, to your post I believe that is just how it is in the contractor groups. Everyone is just waiting for the chance to call someone stupid. I have been trying to do everything I can to learn about electrical systems that I can. I have taken the courses through internachi multiple times. When I see something I am not sure on I try doing my own research but this was completely new to me so decided to try the forum again. I also have little business experience so I come here hoping to get advice from the clearly more successful and experience professionals here hoping to learn from them.

Joshua, I just ran into an electrician today and asked him about how these surge protectors are supposed to be wired. He said they do not need to go through a breaker but aren’t supposed to be connected to the main lugs like that either. For questions like that nothing beats talking to a licensed electrician
