Detached Garage and GFCI's

In the Electrical Inspection course, the material states that all outlets in an attached garage require GFCI outlets. Does the same rule apply for a detached garage?

Code may require it in your area (or not), all codes aside it’s a potential safety issue. That said, there have been major updates to the NEC in regards to GFCI protection requirements in recent revisions.

Yes whether attached or detached the garage receptacles would require GFCI protection. The requirement is for receptacle outlets not all outlets. For example a lighting outlet would not require GFCI protection.

Why are you talking about code? Home inspections are not code inspections. GFCI in possible wet conditions are SAFETY concerns. Common sense!

The course should not say GFI outlets or receptacles. It should say GFI protected.

Yes.

So if I, as a home inspector consider it a potential hazard or a feature that could enhance the safety of my clients, it goes in the report. As for me, all receptacles that are in an area where possible wet conditions could occur, should be GFCI protected.

List of places I report on if lacking GFCI…

All kitchen receptacles.
All garage receptacles.
All bathroom receptacles.
All receptacles within a few feet of accessible water (faucet, sink, etc.).
Receptacle for whirlpool tub pump.
All detached structures (shop, barn, garage).
All outdoor receptacles.
