Dormer window roofing

So I’m here in Bar Harbor Maine and I saw this house. The little dormer has what looks like rolled roofing on it. This is not an inspection, just a curiosity.

I found this unusual, as I rarely see dormers that aren’t your basic gable. I’m curious, is this how this should be? Does it matter? Clearly it’s not new, so it’s working or appears to be.

I just thought it was a neat house near the water and thought it was interesting.

The defects I would call out would be mis-applied flat roofing material and possibly lack of proper flashing. The flat roofing material is bent over an exterior curve meaning the granules are stretched/separated exposing the underneath membrane to UV. I can also see in the closeup photo that they used a bunch of mastic at the transition, which makes me highly suspicious there is no metal flashing there. So, the small dormer roofing will likely only work adequately for a few years before it leaks. The owner would be advised to replace it with something more durable (metal or real shingles).

It could be torch down material. We’ve used that in the past. Looks like rolled roofing but much thicker material.
