Exterior Window trim

As I was inspecting a two family home today, the seller was telling my client that he had spent big money on hiring contractors to install brand new window trim on every window in the house. I did all I could to keep a straight face and not laugh at this statement.

The seller didn?t know it, but I had already told my client (outside) that all the new window trim that was recently installed, needed to be removed and that proper window trim and kick-out flashing should be installed. I informed him that rainwater will destroy the casings on every window in the house. The plastic trim that was installed around the windows must have been purchased at a lawn and garden outlet. They appeared to be some sort of plastic molding manufactured and intended for something other than window trim.

I?d love to see what would of happened to the casings around these windows in about a year or two.

The overhead plastic looking substance may have been their attempt at flashing.

David I’ve seen similar plastic flashing that came with some windows. The contractor called me and wanted to know what I thought of them. I told him to get some sheet metal window flashing and throw them away. These things were cheap and were already a little warped and they hadn’t been exposed to the sun yet.
