Does IRC2000 code allow range hood metal duct sections to be fastened w/ sheet metal screws that protrude into the inside of duct? I’d really rather screw together than use more costly and more difficult to install clamps.
I know that you cannot use such screws on metal dryer vent ducting because they of potential to collect lint/fire hazard.
It's less of a hassle installing clamps on dryer vents as they're typically only 4".

Tom,
The section I found (M1502.1) says that … duct serving the hood shall have a smooth interior surface… Under the section for dryer connections they specifically call out that no screws are allowed but then go on to say “smooth interior surface”.
I imagine screws would be verboten for the same reason they are not allowed in dryer vents i.e. a bunch of screws would be a good place for grease to collect and subsequently drip back down increasing the potential for a fire in the vent.
I hope that helps. Maybe someone with more knowledge can come along and add more or correct me if I am wrong.

I agree that no screws may be better, but I’m looking for clarification of code. I have the IRC as well as several Code Check books and no where do I see “screws not allowed” in re: to Range Hood Vents. In my experience, the IRC (and other codes) are pretty good about explicitly including restrictions and exceptions. In this case, since screws are specifically mentioned as not allowed for dryers (in both IRC and applicable HVAC Code Check book) and not mentioned in re: to Range Hood Vents, my belief is that they are allowed.
Anyone else have a definitive on this? I would think you guys would want to know the answer as you may need to tell a client whether the use of screws in Range Hood Vent is not code or just not best practice.
Thanks for the reply. I'm impressed w/ the info. on this site...keep up the good work!

I did an inspection last week where I noticed screws in the 8" vent pipe of a down draft unit. I took down the model number from the GE unit intending to reference the install instructions when pointing out this error to the builder. Much to my surprise, the manufacturer’s instructions required the screws and tape! In this jurisdiction, the install instructions will prevail. Be careful.
