Fireplace codes

I know that framing or combustable’s are not to be within 3" of flue. However I cant find the code that states this in the UBC Books.

Another area is balloon framing for dormers and chimnyes. I am finding chimneys over 6 feet above the roof just nailed to the plywood with no supporting members running through the roof line. If you know the code showing this to be incorrect I would appreciate it.

Hi Dale; Can you be a little more specific on the type of fireplace and

chimney your interested in. There are zero clearance fireplace and

chimney systems for instance. The rise above the roof line will vary

depending on the type of construction, i.e. wood framed structure around

a metal flue and or a masonry structure. I think there’s some relevant information in NACHI’s helpful tips located at bottom of the home page.

Have a good weekend..

These should help as a guide.

It's pretty much in line with the IRC provisions as a guide. I don't have a UBC book handy, but if ya really need to know the local code requirement leave that up to the local building department.

I am absolutely amazed sometimes by how much thought goes into doing things wrong
