Does anyone have a copy of NFPA 211 that they can share information about.
On a factory built wood burning fireplace what is the roof clearance. Above the roof and to the closest point of the roof and what is the minimum distance above that point?

Peter - Manufactured Fireplaces are ALLOWED and REQUIRED to be installed in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. The 3/2/10 rule is intended for masonry fireplaces - however if the Mfg. Installation instructions are not available - the 3/2/10 is a good guideline to use.

Just curious, Dan, have you seen any manufactured fireplace with LESS height required? Yes, they are allowed (and required, as you said) to be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions, but I have not seen any which provide for less that that height.
Of course, not only have I not seen them all, I see very few. Call it out at 3-2/10 and let them prove otherwise. Unless, of course, you happen to have the installation instructions there to read.

Jerry and DAn - You’re both right from what I can tell. I called 2 different code officials today and looked in the IRC code book. It specifically uses the 3-2-10 rule with masonry fireplaces, and specifically says under prefab fireplaces that they are to be installed per manufacturers installation instructions - no mention of 3-2-10 or other heights.
Now if I had the manufaturers specs available thats what I'd use - if not its seems safe to drop back to 3-2-10 and let others sort it out or dispute that if they want.
