Are gas fireplace gas line shut-off valves supposed to be located within sight of the fireplace?

New construction and it was located just below in the basement.

Also, I’ve never seen a gas valve resemble a water shutoff valve. Is this right?

location could be a city / county code item that could differ.

Not sure about the valve type but the joint tape should not be the white teflon stuff, it should be yellow. If it is joint compound I guess any flavor is ok. Looks like that is blue joint compound.

I would guess the experts on this are usually in the hvac or plumbing section.

Hey Kevin,

I believe that shutoff needs to be in the same room and within 6 feet of the fireplace
