Gas stove top venting requirements

I know this has been asked before, so please forgive me. Does a gas stove top require a hood/vent? I know it does in commercial applications, however I am talking specifically residential. is there a code reference?

No hood/vent requirement that I’ve ever seen or know of.

I think some localities may have added a requirement for new construction. There seemed to be a brief flurry of pearl clutching over gas stove “exhaust fumes” a little while ago but clients haven’t asked about it in a while.

It is not required and yes you would reference IRC G2425.8. In that reference you will find one provision requiring venting however it would need to be a very small area which of course would not occur in a typical residential application.

I have a gas stove with no venting. Had it for almost 18 years with no issues. CO monitor within 10’. However, some local jurisdictions may require it even if codes don’t address it.

My understanding is a range hood is not required by the IRC for a normal style gas oven/range. I always call out missing CO alarms in that area with a gas range.

However, as an energy auditor, I test gas ovens and burners for CO. I have had ovens producing 800 ppm plus of CO. That is a big concern to be aware of. As a HI, I operate the oven and burners and visually observe if they appear to be burning clean. Dirty burning flames produce CO. CO can kill people.

As an Energy Auditor, I am trained to call out range hoods above gas stoves that don’t vent to the outside. Your question instigated a search of BPI and ANSI Standards. I believe it’s present somewhere in the Standards, but I haven’t found it.

Not required for most regular gas ranges, but if the manufacturer requires one or you have a fancy commercial gas range with an open top broiler installed then it’s required.
