After AmFam bought HG, your clients were “peddled 3rd party services on the down-low?” Really? What kind of “3rd party services?”
@gromicko how can I take advantage of the free offer if my homegauge subscription is due now?
Your first step is to register: www.homegauge.com/internachi so that you can be alerted to the deal in 13 days.
is the deal for the the whole home gauge system or just the report writing?
Have you signed up at the link?
I just moved away from HG a few weeks ago because it sucked at syncing the reports between my tablet and computer.
That’s not an issue with the totally new version coming out in 12 days.
It’s a great partnership between two honorable organizations.
InterNACHI members prevent things from going wrong for Americans… AmFam is there to help when things do.
Are Canadians eligible?
On another topic, a local insurance company offers us $15/mo for reports…
Which insurance company and which report writing software?
I have signed up it seems like a great thing
Nick, just because we can’t point to a publicly published example doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened. Most clients never read the agreements or privacy policies…something those who write them are banking on. I’ve lost inspections more than a few times when a client does read these documents and asks me about how their data will or might be used. The docs are written with ambiguous language because ambiguity goes to the drawer. You know that, the attorneys involved know that and some of us know that. Once the data is available, it’s not long before it’s used or abused and if an entity is caught all they need do today is offer an apology and a worthless credit monitoring service for a year. A system designed to be abused.
I’ve spent 30 years in IT and the last 23 in data security working for Federal and State governmental entities including, but not limited to Infragard (I am a founding member), FBI and higher ed. Unless or until you or someone else publishes a document explaining how this benefits Nachi, HG and inspectors AND what options for opting out have been opened for inspectors and clients of same, there will be distrust. Data is gold. We all know this and people are right to be skeptical. “When something is free, you are the product” has never been more true than today. I don’t believe, at this point, that anyone is acting with malice aforethought but, the smell is in the air. I hope this ends up being a good thing for everyone involved.
It doesn’t offer synching. You have to upload the report from the mobile app to your dashboard and then download it to whatever device you’re going to use for finalizing the report. Sounds like maybe you didn’t understand the software.
You can still opt out. You are correct that a default “opt in” is sneaky and reeks of being shady. We’ve complained to them before. They don’t seem to care.
Has to be done manually with a hard connection (cable). You also have to have access to the file structure/location, something Apple has never been good with (keeps you locked in to their product). Bottom line is if you use Apple products you’re SOL.
i know how to use it, but having to upload the template to the cloud/download to tablet/write report/reupload to cloud/download to pc/ finish report… was causing issues if any step was skipped or if the template was modified in between. Spectora did take a bit more to set up my template, but eliminates most of those steps.
Notice the crickets on this question?
The non-cloud version of the software cannot easily be controlled by HG or anyone else. A cloud version requires that ALL data is synched to the cloud all the time. It is no longer within your care, custody or control. I believe that answers your question.
What changed your mind all these years in regards to staying arms length from having InterNACHI member customers data farmed out?
I didn’t allow it. Should’ve said where my client’s data was potentially being peddled.
I would just put an asterisk next to ‘‘free’’ on this one. Say certain terms and conditions apply. Must sign up for a certain level service HG offers. That HG service you will have to modify your agreement and know that your client’s data will be shared, vetted, used for purposes beyond your control or your client’s control.
End of the day, long as everyone is clear on what is happening here, then it’s up to that Inspector/Business to decided how they want to operate. Everyone has their own POV and approach on how they want to conduct their business. But, I’m hesitant to see a non-profit home inspector association that I’m a member of that does not sell products to consumers or does not sell their data…now offer a ‘‘free’’ membership benefit with a vendor that has a relationship with a subsidiary that collects data from an Inspector for their personal gain and use on how they see fit.
What’s stopping our association from going further or more? This is new territory here imo. Maybe I haven’t scrolled through all the membership free benefits lately? Maybe I’m too old-school?
