I’m beginning a new career,I have 20 years as an Electrican and the last 5 as an Electrical Contractor. Is the American Home Inspectors Training ( AHIT) a good school. I’m from Arkansas and Memphis is close enough for me.If I’m going to do this career change ,I’m going to do it correct and get as much knowledge as possible ,so I can inspect the homes the best that I can. Thanks for all the info , this site is very knowledgeable.

Billy,

I took the AHIT class in Virgina last December. I was happy with the instructor. He was an old pro from GA. The study materials that you receive before the class are very helpful. The pictures are not the greatest quality, but they use the color versions in the power point presentation in class, so you get to see what they are talking about. You really need to take the time to read all of the material before you attend the class.

We did 2 inspections at houses in the area on the last 2 days of classes. I would have liked a bit more instruction (practical hands on) in the class with HVAC and roofing. They had some old units, but we sort of rushed through that part of the class.

We had an interesting array of folks, class size was about 12. The reports are great for beginners, but totally different from what I am using now.

Billy, I took the AHIT Home Study Master Course (300 hour) I am also a general contractor, so knowing a lot of the terminology helps.

I liked the home study course because I still run the construction company. I set a side 2weeks and went full boar and finished it and was still at home if problems came up on site. Had only a few calls to handle so that helped. The Instructors were there when I had a couple of questions and helped out right away. I think it took me 90 - 100 hours to go through, and yes I read every page, I paid for it so I was going to read it all. I really enjoyed it and learned from it.

Hope this helps.

Check out PITI in Kansas City (www.homeinspectiontraining.net) or the Leonard Hawes Real Estate school in Dallas. Both have a little better training program than Ahit according to several local guys that have had HI graduates of all three.

Inspection Depot is the best available.

They have a Home Inspection class and a New Construction Inspection Class.

I know both instructors (both are friends of mine) and they not only know their stuff, but are excellent teachers too.

Too bad I don't get a cut off this, but I don't. Just telling you for your benefit and enjoyment.
