My father was drafted in May 1941. We weren’t at war yet so it was a one year hitch to get the country ready for war. Of course after December 7th he was in for the duration. 29th Division, 116th Regiment, Company B.

He was appointed to OCS and had a choice to make. He could accept the OCS appt. or he was selected to head a cadre of artists who would paint promotional posters and signs for the war. He chose OCS and fought Italy as a First Lieutenant; 337th infantry, Hq company (liason officer)

3 campaigns and one Bronze Star later he returned to the states in 1946.

I have a large number of sketches and small paintings done during the war and in Italy. Some of them painted on the backs of “K ration” cartons.
