Hello I am currently doing internachi online training and I did complete the roof inspection section online. I wanted to check my roof for hurricane damage. I don’t know if this was already like this or not. Some shingles throughout the roof have holes in them. Under the hole is sheet metal. All the holes are in pairs. I can’t peel any shingles back on any place on the roof to see if they all have metal. I feel like this is not a coincidence that the holes are all in pairs. Some sort of flashing underneath? It appears that even though the shingle has a hole, there is no way there can be a leak because of the metal flashing material is intact underneath. I did complete the course on roof but I don’t feel that anything was mentioned about this type of situation. I live in Orlando FL. Home is 6-7 years old original roof. Please help guys I am eager to learn and also protect my home as well as others. See attached pics
That’s old damage. Typically from people nailing roof anchors directly through the shingle. After they are done, they pull out the nails and slide a piece of flashing under the top shingle to provide water protection. Quicker fix than replacing the shingle, better fix than just filling the holes with caulk. Solar companies do this sometimes around here.
