A 1959 Frank Lloyd Wright stye contemporary ranch. The ceilings throughout are this material. It looks like some type of insulation that I have never come across. Anyone know what it is?

Yes, it is a type of fiber insulation. Was quite popular in the era. Theoretically strong enough to install over the rafters and support the roof covering. Was also inexpensive and quick to install. Popular with contractors. In my area (Northeastern upstate NY) the Catholic Diocese used the material for any new Churches and Church Properties for those reasons. However, if there was ever any leak and it got wet it would lose dimension, strength, shape and literally fall apart. All the Churches have had to remove the roof coverings and the material, repair or replace damaged rafters, install new sheathing and insulation and roof covering material.
