Metal drum in crawlspace?

Hey guys,

So I ran into this today in the crawlspace and can’t seem to find anything on it. It was open at the top and had a bit of trash and plastic inside it. Is this just an old trash barrel or some type of fuel tank? Curious if anyone has seen this before.

It’s built in 1925

Is it possible they just wedged it in there to hold up that floor joist?

Man it’s definitely possible. Lol

Maybe someone will bounce along and recognize it but it appears to be fairly nondescript.

I agree, that floor structure is a whole lotta mess

Maybe some type of improvised cistern.

Ahhh that explains it. It’s a vat for brewing beer and whiskey! Very common during the Prohibition period.

Looks like a washer drum.

I agree. Looks exactly like an old washer drum. My grandma had one on her back porch. She used it up until the early 80s and finally my cheap grandpa finally bought her a new automatic washing machine.

Cistern is my guess

Looks pretty substantial. Sometimes, we are left scratching our heads.
