I am interested in adding mold and radon testing to my services. Does anybody know if it is nessary to obtain a certification or license in the state of Florida before taking samples? If so, can anyone recommend a good home study course?

Kevin,

Mold does not require State Certification but Radon does. There is a class and State test, for Radon, the first week of Dec. in Tampa.

Give me a call and I'll tell you what I know.

Florida requires Licensing for Radon.

Florida also has a low incidence of recorded Radon.

Joe,

You listed the EPA Radon map. I called Florida Health as their map shows a totally different concern pattern.

The FL rep said the EPA map is out of date, Fl has conducted additional studies and provides a newer map.

The state of FL would like to see mandatory Radon prevention built into new homes. There are required testing for some business situations already in effect in FL.

Robert:

Both maps are giving the same information. There may be variations due to time but the info appears to be accurate.

It is the interpretation of the statistics that is different.

The Federal EPA website shows an Average of 2-4 pCi/L in the areas of higher concern.

The Florida map shows areas of elevation that 5% of the homes will exceed 4.0 pCi/L.

As a comparison, here is the PA Map.
