Now what about these TAP-INS?

The main feed is Aluminum 2/0...

look at the pic below, they say 1/0 on the tap-in device...anything I should know about this?

The upper picture looks like a foot lug has been jammed into the panel terminal.

That is definitely a violation.

The other two pictures of insulation piercing connectors may be fine.

The use of these inside the enclosure is fine, what I do not know is what they are feeding and the where the overcurrent protection is for the tapped conductors.

You say the main feed is 2/0 AL and it looks like the connector says 1/0 to 8.

A couple of questions

1) Did you see that the wire leaving the breaker is 2/0?

2) These connectors should have two ratings one for the tap and another for the run.

example

Run 4/0 to 1

Tap 1/0 to 8

I went to the Ilsco web site and if these connectors are made by Ilsco it is not looking good.

http://ebusiness.ilsco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=1&categoryId=151

The only one with a 1/0 to 8 rating is the for the Run

An Ilsco IPC-1/0-2 is rated 1/0 to 8 run and 2 to 8 tap.

It is possible these in the picture are another brand.

As far as who the manufacturer is…or any additional info…does this foto help?

They are feeding a subpanel which powers the pool pump, sprinkler pump, and pump fopr the jaccuzzi in the pool.

heres a view of the inside

I could not identify where the double tap went...

note the "crimp" marks on the feeder to the sub-panel...

Look at this neutral...

I see “ITT” on that piercing device, who used to own “Blackburn”. By now who knows.

I've never seen anyone stick a mechanical lug in a terminal lug like that before. Gives the term "double-lugging" new depth. Bob's right of course, not acceptable.

So…can some of you more electrical type folks give me the call out verbage on this?

Hopefully JP will step in, I am sure he would know the right way to put it.

A little more here, am I correct that the 8 AWG tap of the 200 amp feeders go to feed the small panel on the left. Then they are tapped again with 10 or 12 AWG to feed something out of sight?

You have some major defects here that need to be addressed.

Jerry where are you? ![icon_cool.gif](upload://oPnLkqdJc33Dyf2uA3TQwRkfhwd.gif)

Just start listing what you saw:

  • improper multiple taps - check all neutral, ground and hot terminals for proper terminations and connection
  • improper bolt on taps
  • charring / melting insulation on neutral conductor with overheating evidence on conductor
  • etc.
  • correct any other improper wiring conditions found or created while making the above corrections.

Sure, e-mail me.

I don't know what my schedule is, other than I have a large house in Jupiter to do (was scheduled to do it Wed. but the builder and I figured we might as well wait until after the hurricane to check it out). Then I may have some re-inspections starting to come up in an area where I did 1 year warranty inspections and they had major problems, Frances may have exposed some of those problems I brought up and the builder pooh-pahed.

I've got to check with Lois when she gets back on Tuesday (she live in Palm Beach Gardens and left town Friday to avoid the hurricane) to see what my schedule is.

The rest of this weekend I've gotta bust my butt on these reports for over at Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda.

How about we make it Tuesday the 7th? So we can join the meetings together? If not, I will check on Thursday the 16th, but will keep trying to combine them.

That is my ultimate goal, making a local meeting FOR ALL local inspectors and why I am 'separating' the ASHI part out of it.
