New Guy Wanting Advice on Getting Started.

Hi everyone, my name is Gale, I have been in construction for the last 12 years, and have been remodeling homes since I was 10! icon_biggrin.gif

I got a score of 63 on my first try on the online free test, studied for 2 days and then came back and passed it with a score of 75.

Because I lack any experience in Home inspecting, I was wondering if any of you guys would be willing to help me in how to get started.

I am considering becoming a NACHI member, but I noticed they don't have any inspection sheets available to members.

I live in Kansas, so they don't require a license, insurance, or certification.

I have talked to a couple of inspectors in my area, one of them was real negative and was telling me that it is really a hard business to get into.

I was also wondering could I be self-empoyed without opening a business, or if I had to open a business maybe a sole-propriety ownership would be the way I would want to go for now, what do you think?

Advice and Help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Gale,

I am the MOKAN Chapter President of NACHI. Welcome to the board.

What part of Kansas are you in? I live in Joplin, MO but we also have several members in Kansas City and Kansas, so we will find someone who will help you. In the mean time, go through ALL of the message forums on this bulletin board and it will give you large amount of information. I don't understand what you mean by inspection sheets? My email address is dave@qualityhomeinsp.com if you want to email me, use private messaging or call me at 417-850-9820 if you wish.

I do live in Kansas City, KS. by the way. icon_biggrin.gif

Furthermore I don't have any experience as an inspector, as you can understand getting into something new requires a little coaching, and some technical know how.

So any information any inspector can give me on know how, and the actual process of inspecting, forms required and such like information would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Erol,

There are a couple of good one:

Midwest Training Institute is the one you are referring to.

We also have Professional Inspection Training Institute which is run by one of our members, Dan Bowers.

Gale,

I will just agree with Dave's posts and add that I have a good friend who came out of software development to go into home inspections. He is now a very good inspector. I would say that with your construction background you have a good head start on where he was.

Take a professional training course, and read every book, and watch every good study video you can to learn the business. As Dave said, read the all of the forums on this board regularly, and once you join there are a couple of good threads about marketing and report writing in the members only section.

Good luck, and if I can answer any questions just ask em here or send me a PM.
