New IR Certifications

Fresh out of April Energy Design Update:

**Accredited Infrared Thermography
Certifications Introduced
**The American Council for Accredited Certification
(ACAC) recently announced the latest in a growing line of
certifications it offers nationwide. Investigators or consultants
using infrared thermography instruments who meet
certain eligibility requirements and pass ACAC’s exam on
the subject can earn certification from the only organization
accredited by the third-party Council of Engineering
and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB). ACAC, when it
was known by its earlier name the American Indoor Air
Quality Council, was among the first organizations of its
type to award certifications in such professions as mold
remediation, investigation, and consulting. Within the past
five years, the council undertook the steps necessary to
acquire compliance with CESB and obtain its third-party
accreditation. As a result, there is no requirement a certificant
attends any particular course first to challenge the
exam. Two designations are available from ACAC in the
field of environmental thermography: Council-certified
Environmental Thermography Investigator (CETI)
and Council-certified Environmental Thermography
Consultant (CETC). Eligibility requirements include multiple
years of experience with using infrared thermography
to conduct building investigations: two years for investigators
and eight for consultants. For more information, visit

That certification doesn’t even come close to NACHI Infrared Certified or Certified Master Energy Auditor.

I have to agree with Linas, there are way too many organizations who certify everything from IR to “molecular collection engineer= garbage man” Until a nationally recognized standard is adopted, yer on yer own. Just my opinion. Think Resnet, BPI, HERS et al. LEARN EVERYTHING you can about the the field you wish to enter or expand into, be it HI or IR, LEARN EVERYTHING, take as much education as you can afford, talk to the guys on this message board, a TREMENDOUS amount of talent and experience here and continue to LEARN. Only then shall you succeed.

If I ever chose to go the IR route I think I would find a course provider Linked/Endorsed by ASNT, or I would just make up my own cert like everyone else…

Looks like they “made up their own cert” too.

Infrared Certified](http://www.nachi.org/ir.htm) appears to be the ONLY ONE that:

 • is designed particularly for home inspectors;
 • is approved by the world’s largest inspection association;
 • uses courses already approved by state home inspector licensing boards; and
 • is properly Trademarked.

This would cover that right? ** https://secure.infraspection.com/courses_building_inspector.html](https://secure.infraspection.com/courses_building_inspector.html)

** …and there’s a distance learning program for it as well. :mrgreen:

Yep this one fits the bill perfectly Nick :wink:

That’s the course I took from John McKemma, VERY GOOD. If you feel the need you can “testout” for the Level 1 certification for $200. IMHO just a way to get $200 for them to tell you that you already knew what you are suppose to know.

Certification (if it’s from a well recognized organization) tells the public that you know (or knew at some point) what you are supposed to know in your area of claimed expertise. Might also help you get some work!!

As said earler:
"If I ever chose to go the IR route I think I would find a course provider Linked/Endorsed by ASNT, http://www.asnt.org/learning/courses.htm

BTW, John’s introductory course is not recognized by ASNT.

Chris, yes, I stand corrected… Infraspection’s is another great course. ASNT’s is not IMHO.

RMG offers some good training with regards to moisture intrusion.

They’ve got some good prices for the ADVANCED TRAINING: $6,800.00 for five days + EQUIPMENT is extra.

Nick,

ASNT = American Society for Non-Destructive Testing. It is a standard not a training facility.

ASTM and ISO are a couple of others you will run across in the IR world, as well as many other types of test & measurement. ASTM = American Society for Testing and Materials. ISO = International Organization for Standardization.

GET THE FACTS

I sat in a room filled with Level I, II, and III thermographers who had taken ASNT approved courses.

They ALL said, without exception, that they would NEVER attempt to do a home inspection with an IR camera. They ALL said they were not qualified. Their ASNT courses did not mean anything as a home inspector doing IR. Their certification courses were not geared for home inspections. Get the facts folks.

We have HUNDREDS of home inspectors who are now operating their IR business by taking our class and no other, while costing 70% less than a class that will not teach you how to do an IR home inspection.

We are InterNACHI’s Offical INFRARED CERTIFIED TRAINING class. Always LIVE and never a recording. Webinars every month. Our webinar classes are never canceled for a lack of attendance. Our students can buy the lowest price, major brand, IR cameras in the USA (I do not sell cameras).

Nick Gromicko is correct… ‘INFRARED CERTIFIED’

 • is designed particularly for home inspectors;
 • is approved by the world’s largest inspection association;
 • uses courses already approved by state home inspector licensing boards; and
 • is properly Trademarked.

INFRARED CERTIFIED has the others trying to copy our success. InterNACHI has established itself as the worlds leader in training home inspectors.

About to take this course from what i have heard it is very highly rated. As most courses at available to us here

If you are talking about Infrared Certified, then I am sure John M. teaches a great course. He did a lot for the Certified Master Inspector certification.
Somebody refresh my memory, what organization threatened to sue inspectors because they claimed they had a patent on the Infrared technology? I would not use them.

I think it was someone from Louisiana , it was on here about year ago

Pretty sure that was HomeSafe
