hi everyone. I’ve been an active member in the construction trades since i was 15 starting with roofing, then framing, and foundation work mostly poured walls. i currently own a painting and remodeling business. well, i started looking into the inspection field after deciding it was time to get into the more professional end of the trades. So i sent off my enrollment form and money to education direct for there home inspection course. Ive recently started taking a good look at the credentials of some of my soon to be competition. no one has an education direct degree. Does anyone know if education direct is respected enough in the inspection community that i would even want it on my resum? . what can i do to be taken seriously in this field. and how can i get field experience. thank you.

John-
I took the education direct course - it's a decent introduction and a good overview to the HI field, but more info and training is needed before you do actual HIs.

Hi John,
Education Direct is a very, very basic course and a good beginning guage for a basic idea of what the home inspection field is about. I did the course when I first started four years ago and believe the cost was around just over $500. If you decide to try it and enjoy it, then the large cost goes into your "formal education" (a home inspection specific school) of which there are many.
I'm currently employed as a municipal building inspector and am licensed and certified to do home inspections. My mentoring was done with an older gentleman who was the head of the county bldg dept. for 30 years. Being a woman and not having a "trades" background, it has taken me hundreds and hundreds of inspections to learn about construction. Everyday is a learning experience but I believe I'm a better home inspector because of my time and experience as a building inspector.
I'd be glad to help you with any questions you have about the field or construction if you ever want to email me.
