NHIE exam preparation

Hello all,

I currently hold a North Carolina license, went through AHIT a couple of years ago, passed the NC test (NC board has their own created test), and am a CPI with Internachi.

I live close to the TN border and am interested in getting their state license as well. Does anyone have suggestions for the NHIE exam preparation? I’ve read through a couple of threads on the topic. The exam tends to be biased towards the eastern US? Topics involving pools, sprinklers, irrigation need to be looked over? (not really a thing for North Carolina). The NHIE study guide is the most useful study guide?

Not trying to rehash anything thats already been posted on the topic - just trying to wrap my mind around how to best prepare for the test as sometimes exams can be disjointed from practical in-field knowledge.

Study and know everything!
The NHIE is referred to as a “National Test”, thus there are questions covering all areas of this Country, including all System types.
Yes, there are questions about Boiler Systems for Florida and Texas inspectors.
Yes, there are questions regarding Pools and In-ground Irrigation Systems in Alaska and Minnesota.
And don’t forget, you will also have your local State specific questions to contend with.
Good luck. Most exam takers need it!

The best way to prep for the NHIE is to download, read and study the material on the Exam Content Outline. This will show you the areas of knowlege you will be tested on and the percentage of questions for each domain of knowledge. As an experenced home inspector you should not have a great deal of difficulty.https://nationalhomeinspectorexam.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/EBPHI-Exam-Overview-Packet-2023_Updated-6.25.24.pdf

Did you check Tennesse reciprocity page?

The best way to prep is to just schedule and take the test. If the cost of the test is not a big problem for you, don’t waste your time studying and prepping and just go sit and take the test.

If you were to fail, you’ll have a great understanding of how to prepare for your second attempt.

I did this method a few years ago and passed easily on the first attempt. You may be surprised of how knowledgeable you actually are.

Grab the bull by the horns and ride that SOB!

TN will require him to pass the NHIE.

I did look into it a bit but everything I’m seeing Tennessee requires the NHIE exam whether you are a current inspector of good standing in another state or not. I think North Carolina is one of the few states with their own board approved exam.

Your license requirements must be similar to TN. The fact NC has their own test is why you’re having to take it
