At my inspection this morning there was a floor outlet under a movable island. Was not able to find information or code regarding outlet in the floor of a kitchen. It was not GFCI protected and thinking it should be. The outlet did have a proper floor cover plate. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.
Under the 2020 NEC it doesn’t serve a countertop or is within 6’ of a sink so GFCI protection isn’t required. It is required to be a listed floor outlet suitable for the purpose.
According to the NEC, all receptacles serving countertop surfaces in kitchens must be GFCI protected (NEC 210.8(A)(6)). While this specific code does not explicitly mention floor outlets, it’s a good practice to ensure that any outlet within a kitchen is GFCI protected due to the proximity to water sources and the increased risk of electrical shock.
Floor Outlets:
The NEC allows for floor receptacles in general use areas, but they must be installed in a manner that provides protection from damage and is securely mounted. The receptacle should have a proper cover that remains in place when a cord is plugged in (NEC 406.12 and NEC 314.27(B)).
Location and Use:
For kitchen islands, the NEC requires at least one receptacle outlet (NEC 210.52(C)(2)). While this typically refers to countertop receptacles, having a floor outlet can be acceptable if it’s properly protected and installed. However, the receptacle should ideally be accessible and not pose a tripping hazard.
