Three wires were cut and hanging in the panel today. They were about 8" long hanging from where they go into the house. What is tech. wrong with this? They no longer needed something from inside the house, so they took it off the breaker and there they hang.

The normal way to deal with that is to “tape them back”. If they are taped up and stored away from the panelboard in the enclosure it is not a problem. Neatness counts here.

Are you telling me that neatness inside of a panelboard is within the scope of a home inspection? If the conductors are not energized, how is this a problem?

One of the problems is if they leave to many they will fill up the box and one more is if their not protected from becoming energized they could accidentally become energized and put someone in danger.

Really I have no ideal, just fishing

If the conductors are not 'secured' back in some manner (tape, cable tie, insulated wire wrapped around it, etc.), then those 'future use' conductors could fall into the energized bus or terminals, energizing the conductors, creating a hazard on the other end of that circuit.

You know, fire, shock, electrocution, death, those minor irritating things.

I agree with that, I just don't agree when someone says that neatness inside of a panel is even worth bringing up.

In my opinion neat and workmanlike manner have no place in a safety code.

Besides not having to do with safety these words are meaningless and unenforceable.

What one person sees as neat, another person sees it as a disaster.

If there is a safety issue enforceable code sections can be cited.

I saw a panel the other day that looked exactly like that…it was a work of art! Only problem was there were no ground wires going to any of the three-pronged outlets in the home…beauty stopped at the panel. icon_cry.gif

If you spend a lot of time doing commercial you will see lots of panels that look like that. "Rat's nest" panels are residential things. I suppose it is because the Romex yankers know they will never see it again. Commercial installers expect to be back again and again as long as they can keep the contract.

That’s not true ! I made sure all of my panels wether res. or com. looked like that one… It is really just a matter of the person you work for. Do it fast or do it right.

"Fast" seems to be the winner around here. It is not unusual to see a 2 or 3 man crew rough in a 3000 sq/ft house in a day
