Pool Filter Discharge Pipe

Hello out there in NACHI-Land,

In this business you can never say "I have seen it all" because when you do something new pops up on the radar. Today was one of those days.

While inspecting a home with a swimming pool in the back yard I noticed that the discharge pipe from the sand filter was routed through a a foundation vent into the crawl space.

I filed this for further investigation when I inspected the crawl space.

A rather creative plumber had "engineered" the sand filters discharge pipe to drain into the the waste line for the house which was served by the municipal sewer system.

Very ingenious but this would not even comply with the Morse code.

Best regards,

Mike,

Wouldn't this clog the pipes when he discharges the filters. Especially if the draining hits a p-trap. What did you tell the buyers?

David,

What P trap?

It is not allowed to discharge a pool filter into a waste system. The discharge is supposed to drain onto the ground.

Best regards,

Mike,

I realize that the filter shouldn’t be drained in the plumbing into the house. But my question was “Wouldn’t this clog the system if it was?”

I know all drains have P-traps and I can just picture this filter sand clogging the trap instantly.

David,

There was no P-trap installed and the system had been in operation for years.

Just another case of creative plumbing.

Take care.
