PVC for gas plumbing?

Hello, newbie here once again seeking wisdom. I came across this today, I assume it to be PVC(?) but it’s being used for a gas line, which I thought was no bueno, but I’m having trouble finding information about it on NACHI or elsewhere online, even getting some conflicting info. Anyone care to please educate me? Home was built in 1990 if that helps.

Sleeve? I hope

To myself, this appears to be a Coating. Wait for other to chime in.

Metal gas piping, specifically steel pipe, with a white coating, often a polyethylene (PE) coating, and a schedule designation of 1785, is not a standard combination. “1785” usually refers to an ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standard, which often designates the material and wall thickness of a pipe, not a specific coating.

That is what I see here…sleeved through masonry.

Same here. Schedule 40 thin wall pipe used as a sleeve.

If the PVC were threaded into the T fitting, there would be a threaded coupler in that location similar to this…

Not saying that there is no sleeve, but wouldn’t a sleeve be wider than the circumference of the metal pipe?
Moreover, wouldn’t a plastic sleeve be at least as wider, or wider than the tee fittings Bull Nose?

Ok, so this is being used simply as a protective layer? To protective the line through the masonry. Is this a commonly used practice? I don’t think I’ve come across it before.
