I voted based upon the best response listed. My actual reaction, base on NACHI S.O.P. would be a little different. I think this is a good example, and could use a little discussion after the poll has been released.

Dave,
Looks like a very big bird nest(s). Here in the sierras there are a lot of instances similar to this picture. The builder fails to screen the gable vents and the animals keep on coming. It is squirrels here. Tons of them. When I see this I recommend removing the screen door type screen and installing the lathe screen that masons use for stone etc. and screw it in good. I did this to mine and my neighbors and have had no further problems with the little critters.

Obviously nesting material of some sort.
Obviously feces (droppings) at the gable vent and near nest.
Nesting material got there somehow. (bird, squirrel, rat, yeti, something built it)
Appears to have entered through the gable vent. (more signs)
Fix the vent... remove the material. (By qualified expert of course!)

Without a doubt D was the right answer. But our SOP excludes the requirement to determine the presence of birds, insects, or rodents. I personally am not licensed for ADC (amimal damage control), and feel if I were to comment on the presence of same, I would be opening myself up for additional liability. If I were to discover that situation, I think I would report “damaged vent may be a security issue.”

Evidence of animal or bird infestation found in the attic near a vent with a damaged screen. Correction by a licensed contractor and/or an animal control specialist is advised.
It looks more like a Squirrel nest to me. They used to run out of the attics in VA when I went up into them, and that pic looks just like what I used to see. I would rather find squirrels than bats though ![icon_eek.gif](upload://yuxgmvDDEGIQPAyP9sRnK0D0CCY.gif)

I feel sleazy enough telling clients to have systems further evaluated.
My report would go as such:
Missing or damaged gable vent screen. Appears to be evidence of animal / pest nesting activity (possibly active). The animal / pest may be gaining access through inadequate gable vent screen. Recommend qualified contractor repair or replace screen. Recommend professional (animal control or pest control) remove nesting material and thoroughly clean area as some animals and pests are known carriers of diseases communicable to humans.
