Question 1

Let’s have some fun with a brain teaser! There are 20 common construction words and maybe an acronym or two in this word search. What are they? WARNING!! There may be a long word(s) who have strings of letters containing building materials but I am looking for the whole word and not the subset.

Question 2

What is wrong at this staircase?

Question 3

What very obvious issue(s) can be seen in this new construction townhome?

Question 4

What one specific issue is being displayed here?

Question 5

Riddle me this! I can control the flow of all or nearly all fluids. What am I and what fluids can I control?

Fun With Music

In 1970 this group released a song that started as a gospel hymn as it was inspired by a gospel hymn but changed to something more. They used a structure and a water feature as a metaphor for living through trying times. This one song shaped a very large inspirational movement in this country that seems to have died or is dying over the decades. Who is this group and what is the name of the song?

  1. staircase missing half the stringer on the left side

  2. Looks like missing trim/caulking at the right side of siding, and no counter flashing above headwall flashing

  3. Brick does not span the opening, short of brick at right side, so it should have a lintel. Looks like it has cardboard?

  4. Pressure regulator? Could be used for water, oil, fuel, etc.

Well that was a nasty trick the puzzle generator played! Read your find backwards and see the game it played. However you get that word anyhow for finding it and the nastiness that puzzle generators can do.

It is, I thought that too, had to zoom in

I thought it had a return at the mid point, contacting the wall before the straight section. Sliding your hand down the rail you would have to relax your grasp on the rail or get your hand pinched at the return. Yes, hard to tell in that picture. I could be mistaken.

Ok, I wanted to…I really did but I waited too long and the feeling went away. Besides, I like the one on one face off between you and Bert.

OK now we have winners!! This week it’s Daniel Horton and Bert Hull. Congratulations guys like my Old Grandpappy would say “Ya can’t win the game if you don’t play, Hee Hee”!

Now for the answers to this weeks questions. Notice that unlike stated by a previous complainer we don’t expect you to read our minds for the answer. And unlike the movie with the phrase “There can be only one” (answer) that is not always the case.

Answer 1

What a nasty little puzzle generator! As seen in the bottom, right they generated both “guage” and “gauge” and added plenty of other actual valid terms found by our winners.

Answer 2

Yes the trim was missing on the left side and although not visible the right side was so poorly cut even the carpet couldn’t hide the gaps. Both were called out at the inspection even though they are aesthetic issues. The picture might be slightly misleading but the handrail is actually continuous.

Even though valid issues have been called out, and they count all the same for credit, I was looking for another more important issue. Due to the second floor construction overhanging a large portion of this staircase (approximately half) there is no direct light source over the bottom of the stairs to illuminate them. The only light serving this staircase is in the second floor ceiling above the top half.

Answer 3

There are actually two major issues here. The highly obvious one is at the second floor where the siding meets the brick veneer wall there is a huge gap between the trim and wall at the inside corner.

The second issue you would need to look a little closer for. Below the double window weepholes are missing at the base of the wall. For those who wish to cite an authoritative reference for the missing weephole issue you can go to the Brick Industry Association web site www.gobrick.com. There you will find plenty of references for the proper flashing with this vertical wall situation.

Not that you would know but it should always be erred on the side of caution that the water-resistive barrier behind the siding and brick veneer may not be properly installed and the siding issue is significant water penetration point waiting for something to occur. For the weephole issue obviously it becomes a matter of lack of drainage if water penetrates behind the brick veneer. In this case during the pre-drywall inspection the water-resistive barrier was improperly installed and there was no expectation it would be properly repaired before the exterior coverings (siding and brick) are installed.

Answer 4

At the entry point for the HVAC refrigerant lines a proper lintel has not been installed over the opening. Instead it appears they have tried to use what appeared to be a wood veneer material for a lintel.

Answer 5

This was a very generic question looking for a generic answer. This could be a regulator or a valve as the words are nondescript in what they control. As for “fluids” remember liquids as well as gasses are considered to be fluids. Of course leave it to the Engineer to catch the nuance in the question about “fluids”. He was a real Tiger ripping that question apart wasn’t he!

Sorry for the ads in the answer. This is a good rendition from their 1981 reunion performance.
