Trying to help a past client. Anyone know of the best way to remove old roofing cement off of the brick face? Inspection i had done 2 weeks or so ago. Previously had 3 layers of roofing over a porch roof. They sealed the flashing to the brick face with roofing cement. After the tear off of the 3 layers and the re-roof, the drop in height of the the roof surface has left an un-attractive outline of the old “flashing”. I know of products that would probably work to some degee, but am trying to find the best product with the least drawbacks. I would think all would lighten the brickface, at least temporarily. Any tips would be appreciated.

I would not garentee antihng here.Especially since it does cost to buy thre product material plus if it drips onto the new area it might weeken that as well.
Well two things that come to mind right off the bat are either karoseen or WD-40.
Both are used in working with cleaning up tar where you don't want it.
When I have to clean up tar from cloths in the laundry LESTIOL also works.
Karoseen is cheap and used by roofers to break down tar and asphalt paving. It also is used to re-activate asphalt paving when doing patches.
WD-40 is a quick clean up when i have to get back into the truck after doing a quick roof seem or patch.

Nothing will make it so that it’s not noticeable. The problem with using solvents is they make the tar less viscous and it will seep right into the brick face and will leave a stain.
I used CO2 and was able to freeze the tar enough so that I was able to chip it off a brick face in a situation similar to what you’re describing. Blast the area till it frosts, use a rock hound’s hammer and carefully chip the tar off. It took me 9 hours to do about 35 feet and left a nearly indiscernible scar.

Thanks Chad,
I'll add it to the list. By the way, how much CO2 ?, where would he get it?, apprrox. cost? Area to be De-tarred was roughly 25ft. of a hip roof over a porch. I've got a 2 pm inspection in the city, so i'll check back when finished. Thanks again for the help, thus far.

CO2 can be had from any welding supply or soft drink place. Dry ice would work too. It cost me about 75 bucks for three cylinders the size of scuba tanks if I remember correctly…maybe less.

try using a good old hammer and stone chisel.with some patience the old sealant should flake off.usually it is brittle.
