Self-closing device on garage-house doors

I’ve heard from 2 different sources recently that codes have changed in the last year so a self closing device isn’t required on doors that separate attached garages and living spaces. I’ve always checked for and reported on the lack of a self-closing device on such doors, along with lack of weatherstripping, and/or lack of a fireproof door.

Is anyone else aware of this change in code(s)? Anyone stopped reporting on self closing devices who previously had been?

It appears that this is a UBC requirement only. R309 of the IRC does not mention self-closing devices.

Hi. Jim;

I agree with Jeff, the 2003 IRC 309 does not mention the fact of self closing doors. I would personally check with the local code inforcement for your area, because most ussually, local codes are the last say to what ever code has been adopted.

Take care

Code or not, all my clients are aware of this issue.

Garage doors.

If I find they do not close . I call it for safety reasons I also make sure they have a good gasket to the home also to keep out fumes and check the auto reverse and eye if the big door has it . I make sure I have written it up if they do not fix it NO MY FAULT.

We had a family where the dad came home to get his kid to take to day care . He stopped in the garage and decided to have a coffee with his wife . TWO adults and kid over come by fumes .neighbour saved the family . How can I get in trouble for a safety recommendation .
I would still write it up as safety . Roy Cooke CRA!!! Cover Roy's a$%
