does anyone know the required space in front of the toilet
by this i mean the space from the toilet to the wall or the tub
is it 24 inches or 36 inches

21 in front.
15 from the center to a side wall (or tub).
Not to be confused with ADA which is 18" (side) and 48" (front). 
If you know the size of your client (and family members) what a “code” says could be irrelevent. I would call out the inconvenience to my client on a cramped space that met the minimum standard if I thought he might have a problem with it.
