I was always taught that the TPR valve needs to be extended and terminates 6 inches from the floor. I see alot of homes new homes where they are extended to the crawlspace or in a drain line. Is this right? How does one know if the water heater is building too much pressure if it is going into these places?

6 inches from floor ground. If in a drain the drain size should be at least the same size as the outlet of valve.
Drain may not run uphill and may not be trapped. No kinks or restrictions in pipe, end of pipe must be visible and can not be threaded.
If it is in a crawl space is that visible or not? I would not want one in a crawl space just in case I were in there and it blew, it could make it difficult to move out of the way.

Thanks for the info. How is things in Las Cruces? It has been a while since I have been there. I was there to open a magnet wire plant there. I was helping with machine setup. It is a beautiful place, and I am thinking of retiring there.
