Trouble opening a panel

I wanted to open this panel to inspect what I’m assuming is the main service disconnect but couldn’t get it open. I released the latch at the bottom and tried lifting and pulling the panel out but it seemed to be stuck somewhere at the top. It has hinges on the left side.

Any advice on trying to get this type of panel open safely?

It will not open unless it is turned off.

There is normally a bypass that will allow the cover to be opened with the power on for testing. It will not open under normal conditions without being turned off.

Thanks for the info! So, would you just disclaim this as a limitation? I generally wouldn’t flip a main breaker since there can be important things powered…

I was looking for something but couldn’t find anything…

See the slotted stud turn that with a screwdriver.

About 5" down from the top and 1" from the back in photo #3. Funny looking slot with flat sides. Turn and hold while you depress the latch on the front and try to pull the cover open. Might need three hands.

Thanks for that description Robert. I’ve yet to come across one of these disconnects on a home but it’s bound to happen sooner or later.

Awesome. Thanks for the tip! I’ll give that a try. If this was at a real inspection, I probably would have Googled to see if I could find a manual or something for this type of box.
