Hmmmm. I hadn’t thought about that. Built in 1970, so it’s possible. Anyone know of any web sites for asbestos roofing shingles?

That was my first guess only because it looks like fiber and looks like cement. But I’m not familiar with it as a roofing material. In South Texas we used composition, wood, and clay; here we use clay, concrete, clay, concrete, and sometimes clay. Ooops. Sometimes concrete, too. Occasionally, I’ll run into composition and wood, but this was totally unexpected. Interestingly, the two houses on either side had metal roofs. I had never seen metal roofs on a residence, only on commercial buildings.

Is that a whole shingle or a cut off? Is the shingle top the first photo?

Here's one site:

It’s a whole shingle, but it’s the half-size typically used at the edges to finish a row.

The top is the first photo. Note the "C" on it. Unfortunately, none of the other shingles had any letters. Darn. ![icon_cry.gif](upload://r83gSGUzNOacIqpjVReDwcR83xZ.gif)

You've been away from Texas too long....residential metal roofs are enormously popular here and have been for 10-15 years at least.

Do they hold up well under those summer afternoon hail storms?

You could send me some fresh jalapenos, some Texas barbecue, and some chicken-friend steak so that I wouldn't miss Texas so much.
If you wanted to.
Really wanted to, that is. ![icon_lol.gif](upload://zEgbBCXRskkCTwEux7Bi20ZySza.gif)

Strangely enough, those metal roofs do seem to withstand the occasional hail without significant damage. Doesn’t make sense but I’ve not heard anyone complaining about that being any more of a problem than with composition shingles.

Best I can do re: the other request is: http://www.rudys.com/index.html

Of course metal roofs can withstand hail…much better than asphalt or composition shingles.

The problem is the noise…but since hail storms only last about 5 minutes or so, it’s really not a big deal…just wakes you up in a hurry when your fast asleep! icon_biggrin.gif

Good point. I was thinking more on the lines of dents in the metal roofing like cars are infamous for getting during a hail storm. For sure, the integrity of the roof wouldn't be in question, just the aesthetics.

My same thoughts.
