This was an A O Smith water heater (13yrs old). The burner area was bulged on the bottom. I have never seen this, is this by design or failure?

last 15 to 20 years. Of the ones that do last longer than their warranty many will leak.

I have an electric AO Smith water heater in my garage(on the floor) that was installed in 1993. When we re do the bathroom we will replace the water heater as it is on it's last legs.

Looks like a heat and/or pressure problem. The amount of rust flakes on top of the burner unit is nearly as thick as the element.

Im betting the TPR is frozen, unit has been set to run on high heat, probably copper & galvanized supply lines, without di-electrics installed and the water pressure in the dwelling is high. No doubt, its going to fail and a lot of water is going to be on the floor. Has any started a betting pool when the big event is going to occur? ![icon_rolleyes.gif](upload://iqxt7ABYC2TEBomNkCmZARIrQr6.gif)
