Standard clips were nailed with 8d or 10d nails. And some used a T-Nailer…faster I suppose but totally worthless for uplift. And, guess what…it counts as a nail on a clip.
According to the form any nail would be sufficient. I am in no way saying that’s correct but that is the rules of the forum.
No! However, we can’t tell as inspector.
Every strap, bracket and clip has its own nailing designation.
The only requirement, for the 1802, is to have three nails in the strap to count as a clip, with no mention of the size of the nail.
It was not against code to leave empty nail holes. To achieve the uplift stated by the strap manufacturer, you had to install nails according to their specs. However, a design professional could call out a differing nailing pattern, and it would be up to that professional to give the nailing pattern, size of nail, and resulting uplift resistance.
Hmmm. I guess the form does just say “nails”
That is not correct.
Back then it was. I seem to remember the building inspectors only requiring 3 nails in the strap. There were no approvals or manufacturer’s recommendations to look up, and the plans did not specify number of nails in strap strap either. I did however fill all the holes on a common clip…some framers did not.

That’s cause people want to overthink the form.
That’s true:D
Keep it simple. We can leave the overthinking to the engineers
I know of a boat access barrier island here that most of the homes built in the 80’s have the wood to wood clips with all holes filled with roofing nails. ![]()
Let me throw this scenario out there:
A Roofing Contractor that retrofits clips during reroofs (legally through a GC of course) The way I understand it the Building Inspector does not even look at them because it is not required so would it still be ok to use any nail?
Roy, not sure where you get your information from, but it is wrong! It was not necessary to fill every hole. Also it is a moot point, as it has no bearing on the question at hand. As long as it has three nails it is acceptable.
