I finally got tired of hauling my big, honking Little Giant type ladder upstairs to gain attic access thru the small hatches. I found an Ace H/W nearby with a 12.5’ Xtend-n-Climb for $150 so I bought it. Got it home, took it out of the box, extended it, marveled at it, then starting collapsing each rung back down to store it. Got to the 2nd section, dropped it, Lo & Behold, just like everyone says I pinched the bejesus out of my right index finger. Dang, that will only happen once! I’ve got a nice little blood blister now to remind me for a few days how to operate this thing. I think I’m gonna really like it though once I get the hang of it.

Michael,
I got the same ladder and 2 minutes out of the box I pinched the living coon dog baheebadus out of my index finger. One good thing is it has a very short learning curve. I love the ladder and havent’ hurt myself since that one time. I always say when all else fails reading the frigging instructions. It clears says to keep your fingers and hands out of the way. It is great for those narrow stairs in townhouses, apartments and condos. PLus it impresses the heck out of everyone. You just need to keep an eye on it cause everyone wants it after they see it. Hope your finger stops hurting soon. Mine hurt like hell for a week.

Hi
I keep seeing these post about this absolutely fabulous ladder and have been trying for a long time now to find a distributor here in the great white north.
Needless to say I have had no luck. If anyone has an idea as to where I can get one up here I would be grateful.
By the way I will read the instructions and try not to catch my fingers. Now having said that will probably get so excited when I finally get this thing I will forget all about this post and open the box and grab the damn thing extend, retract etc.etc.etc…

Larry,
That’s exactly what I did. Even read the friggin’ directions again that came with it. I think the deal is that you don’t quite totally understand the ‘keep fingers clear’ instructions until after you’ve close it once. I do know that ACE Hardware stores carry them or can order one for you. I think ACE is worldwide, is it not?

Larry,
I tried the Ace Hardware route here but I always kept missing the dang sale (the usually sell for $125 and its usually on a three day weekend sale) so I went onto Amazon and paid 190 but that included the shipping. I would have paid twice that if I had known how cool it is and I haven’t hurt my back since I got it. It is perfect for those times too where you need two ladders say on split level roofs. It only weights 29 lbs and it has a built in strap w/ velcro and built in handle/pad on the bottom rung. I did not buy the carrying case as I figured that was a waste of money as it would be out of the bag almost every day. I have carrying cases now all over my garage and office that never get used. I also know they sell them at Target.com for $177. Hope this helps…Doug

Larry, go to target store on line www.target.com $179.00 plus shipping. It’s called Xtend & climb, I’ve had mine going on 2 years and love it. Never pinched a finger knock on wood, the realtor’s love it so I have them close it, pinches their fingers every time . Not really but what a thought. Hope this helps you find one.

What do you guys do with the attic entrance? Do you extend those ladders and just push the piece of drywall or plywood out of the way? When you come back out of the attic if the ladder is leaning on the opening and you shrink it how do you put the opening back on? What am I missing?

Mark,
The 3 times recently that I felt like an Xtend-n-Climb would have been beneficial the scuttle hatches were in a closet and all within about 6-10" from the wall. My intention is to place the ladder on the wall then move the hatch cover and then, only if need be, extend the ladder some more and place it in the hatch to gain attic access. I’ll reverse that order when exiting. If the hatch is further away from a wall then I’ll continue to use the LG I guess.

I have had the same experiences. Usually it works out fine that I can lean it against something and move the panel. Only had to pull out my Werner articulating ladder twice to get the hatch out of the way and both times it was in a garage.
