Stuart, on a serious side the vent my opinion should not be obstructed, although the mast is minimal, the bolt going through may have the potential to collect leaves or other debris, or make it an interesting place for a future bird nest.

Stuart,

I completely agree with Joe, at the very least it has potential to get glogged with debris and such.

Plumbing vents arte designed (or should be) to handle a

certain amount of drainage air - any obstruction lessens

the design function of the vent and very well could create

a plumbing back-up in the drains.

I would use the “reasonable man” approach with this. If the proverbial “they” had to write down every stupid thing NOT allowed it would require several 18 wheelers to carry the code books. It just seems like if some people are left alone without any adult supervision they will manage to come up with the stupidest ideas about how to upgrade, repair or build something. These are usually the same individuals that will make brilliant comments like, “Hell, it ain’t kilt none of us yet!” or “It was a working just great till it quit!”

Your gut instinct is usually very good at telling you something isn’t right.

I would be concerned about the possibility of galvanic corrosion between the dissimilar materials.
