Why do people want contractors? We did it to ourselves. We open pseudo schools to “teach” people into believe they actually know how to inspect a home after a 40 hour class room session. Then came the pseudo organizations which then certified, qualified, quantified and bastardized the profession.
So each was bragging about their so called “qualifications” by organizations that were not backed up by professional results. So then it does a disservice to all of those in that organization. There were no checks and balances. There was no one to complain to when it was done wrong.
So the Contractor, saw an opportunity to make an extra buck and the client had at least a place to go and complain if something was wrong. They have a strong presence in legislation. They have organization and a “perceived knowledge and professionalism”. Why do we not have that? We do not hold ourselves and others to a higher standard. Our entrance exams are a Joke and the people know that. So the way I see it, we do it to ourselves.
There is nothing we can do about the past, but we sure as hell can change the future. I do not have the answers, but I do know doing the same thing over and over very seldom leads to different results.
To all you knuckle head contractor bashers stating that contractors do nothing but hurt the Home Inspection business — THINK ABOUT THIS-----
I happen to know two Home Inspectors that are out there fighting for us all, making changes, and speading positive influences. Owe, and they happen to be CONTRACTORS. They also did one hell of a job last Friday and Saturday - Go ahead and bash that over your thick ignorant heads.
Keep it up and I can guarantee there will be an association or chapter that will consist only of Contractor/ Inspectors - and I’ll be a member – will you?
John I do think one part of growing is to admit you suck at something. That is a hard pill for some to swallow. If I need to improve on something, then that is admitting I am presently doing it less efficient than another person. Some people are not willing to admit that. Hell, I am…I learned alot in just 2 days…those who do not go to ANY type of inspector meetings are missing out on a ton of info.
Hell I want to check out the Tampa Chapter. There are several smart people in that organization I would love to get to know, they have alot to offer.
I hear you John, just so tired of the few that won’t even try to accept the inevitable and work together. They antagonize the situation to no end. Its a broken record over and over again, one big generalization made for all contractors. Sure would like to know how they would justify this for a HI of 20 years that decides to get a GC license for the purpose of building shopping malls. No conflict there — only imaginary ones.
I am sure I missed alot of very usefull information.
I would rent it if it was availble from NetFlix.
Maybe the next one will fit better in my schedule.
I would have just hated being around the HI bashing. I would feel just terrible if I heard contractors doing that.
Doors don’t hit me - I close them behind me - You should ponder your own advice, as you and those like you are the prime reason this thread exist. We could go back and forth, and agree to disagree, or we could put these differences aside and work to improve these relations. It will happen with or without your approval stamp.
