Metal flashing at eaves edge?

Am I missing something here? I have never seen anyone do this in over 2000 inspections. Metal flashing was installed at the eaves edge lifting the shingles up. I live in Michigan and I feel like this is prime for ice dam leaking.

Has anyone ever seen this and maybe know the purpose of why it was installed like this? I’m calling it out as a defect.

My wag, possibly installed by the gutter company to lift the shingle edges up.

Agree. Uses the force of rushing water (redirected) to ‘wash’ the debris off the gutter screen to prevent buildup which contributes to clogging.

Where is the underlayment? Shouldn’t you have some Ice and water shield on top of the drip edge. You should not be able to see the top of the drip edge. when you lifted the shingles on your video I could not see the “self-adhering eaves membrane” (aka ICW)

Something is not right.

Look how goofy the electrical mast flashing boot is installed, for instance:
