I still see those cracks on both the three tab and timberline type shingles. I was also under the impression that this type of cracking was limited to older defective shingles. The cracks are very difficult to see from the ground. It's always worth the extra effort to get up the roof.
Recently I saw some plumbing vent stack flashings that were installed backwards, as in 180 degrees in the wrong direction. The hump in the flashing was on the upside of the stack and rubber boot was stretched so much it left a big gap. This was a new roof. That was a new one for me.

Thanks for the info, I inspected one about 3 weeks ago that had one area that was cracked (12’ x 24’ area) as the previous pictures show. The area that was cracking the most however was in a heavily shaded area of large mature trees, I found this unusual. The roof was aproximately 15 years old, second layer. Due to other issues the recommendation was the roof should be replaced soon.
