Sawdust attic insulation.

Never seen this stuff before, but it sure looks like sawdust to me. Tell me if I’m wrong. it’s not fiberous. it looks and feels just like sawdust…should have posted this before resizing the picture. It’s in the entire attic area and is 15" thick. I could pick it up and blow it out of my hand…wierd stuff.

Looks like a type of loose fill or blown cellulose fiber to me, but as I have said, I caint see poop from pictures. eusa_think.gif

I would hope it’s not sawdust. That stuff can ignite almost like gasoline. Did you take any outside and try to spark it up?

If the house was built in the 50’s more than likely it is brown cellulose insulation. Very dense and a good low tech insulator. With an R value of about 2.5 to 3.5 per inch. Brown or gray in color, treated with fire retartant. Recommend testing the fire retardancy though, especially after 50 yr of sitting around in an old attic.
