SDWC Truss Screw

I was wondering if anyone here had seen the 6 inch truss screws they’re using instead of rafter ties and wondered what ya’ll thought of it?

I think it’s going to be a pain in the ass. I’m sure they work well, but it’ll need to be documented by the builder or the homeowner is going to get “toe nails” on their Wind Mitigation.

One pre-drywall I did had them and I made certain the home owner knew the stakes and to be sure he kept my report. I took pictures of about 10 of them. The builder also offered document with the engineer seal on it. Lose that and you’re toe nails forever.

I agree they’re hard to verify as sometimes boxing or build outs are in place. They say they’re as good as a H2.5 but I have my doubts.

We really won’t know until a powerful Cat 4 or 5 hits some newer community loaded with these RTW fasteners.

Given the frequency of poorly installed 8D ring shanked sheathing nails we encounter, the strength of a SDWC that’s half driven into air, or on a goofy runaway slant/angle, will be almost zilch.

The product is tested so there shouldn’t be any problem there. The installation would be the huge failure point. They would be worthless if they are not installed at the right angle or too high/low on the beam.

Glad that we do not have Wind Mitigation’s up here. Looks they would be a pain to verify.

They’ve been around for maybe 10 years now. As a builder, I used them over the face plate type hurricane clips. Yes, for the inspector, hard to see unless drywall is not installed. They can be installed into trusses in several other manners besides the illustration above. Engineered, so I trust them as a good product.
