Unknown Finds - Any Ideas

Found this at an inspection today… a panel was in the attic at the top of the roof structure, and it was covered on the roof at the exterior. The house was built in 1900 and is 4,288 sf. Any ideas what it could have been for? I have a few ideas but definitely can’t be certain.

That roof has four gable roofs that are offset creating pinwheel when viewed from the top. That results in a flat area. IMO that is a roof scuttle hatch to access the flat roof area. I have seen a similar scuttle hatch on a flat top mansard style roof.
