Up close it looks like a piece of cheap painted fiberboard that has gotten wet. Asbestos would be good hard up against the flue like that, but I doubt if you have any there.

Yes. The stuff is about 3/16" thick, semi-rigid, high heat tolerance. Same stuff was tacked up next to my folks oil furnace back in the sixties to protect a wooden wall close to the furnace. I remember being told to leave it alone.

I know the stuff you're talking about. If the piece in that photo is only 3/16 thick, then your thoughts may be correct. The one thing that makes me think it's fiber board is the edge is deformed. I tore out about 60 sheets of the asbestos stuff from a house I owned and it just breaks...you can't get it to mash like that. Before y'all get in a huff.. two sets of tyvek coveralls, supplied air respirator, whole house down to studs and pressurewashed, framing and subfloor painted after.
