Under the constitution there is no such thing as an illegal gun. The second amendment doesn’t necessarily protect shotguns and duck hunters. It protects weapons to fend off tyrant’s armies… it protects the very AK 47s Osama mentioned in his speech.
So where does it end Nick? You get to own a bazooka? a stinger? A blunderbuss from the old day is a little different than the AK’s from today. Had they known, would the founding fathers used the exact same language? I don’t think so.
Ok …very funny, now lets sit down so I can get you to understand reality here.
Do you think I would not defend my family from danger with everything , including weapons of any kind at my disposal.?
No… of course not Nick. You know better than that.
But do you feel a American has a right to bear arms means weapons of any kind?
Hmmm …sit back some more, and take this to the point of being ridiculus for argument sake, shall we…
How about if I make my own hydrogen thermo-nuclear devise ?
Is that ok with you?
The constitution says right to bear arms, not guns.
So you see there need to be limits and this is where a reasonable discussion needs to take place.
A bunch of deep woods hunters is different from a 12 year old ghetto kid looking to rob someone, and needs to be addressed.
There is no clear cut black and white issue here, as the world changes and so do the laws.
The word “arms” in those days referred to military weapons.
What arms do those in the military bear these days?
The right to bear those types of weapons, whatever those are these days, seems to me to be protected constitutionally.
Now as for crime… there are virtually no hot crimes in the U.S. “Hot” meaning that the criminal knows the family is home and breaks in anyway, a common type of crime in England where everyone knows there are no guns in the home.
Anyway, we don’t need everyone walking around with AK 47s. We only need a portion of us willing to brandish a weapon from time to time to thwart most hot crimes. Criminals don’t know who of us has them or what homes have them… so they are a deterrent to criminals that help protect the unarmed as well. They can have my TV while I’m out at a restaurant. We don’t even have to discharge the weapon in most cases. That’s how well guns in the hands of law abiding citizens works: We don’t all have to have them, we don’t even have to shoot them most of the time. Wow. They really work.
Criminal interviews show that criminals spend a great amount of time and energy making sure no one is home before breaking in, out of fear of getting shot. They do the same when looking for street victims in attempting to find unarmed ones. Many would-be victims of rape merely had to pretend they had a gun in their purse to prevent the crime. Like I said, guns work. Gun control on the other hand is statistical mass rape and murder.
Obama suggesting that laws should be passed to leave women to defend themselves against generally more aggressive, larger, stronger attackers, with nothing but their fists and screams? He sounds like a sexist of the worst kind.
Like many Albertans, I am very protective of my right to own as many guns as I want. Statistics show over and over again that more guns = less crime. The only thing gun control achieves is removing guns from the hands of law abiding citizens. Although I’m a Canadian, I also enjoy studying United States history and the U.S. constitution is an amazing document if you value liberty.
Nick’s take on the second amendment is right on target. <----(thought I would throw that pun in there)
Whether or not you agree with the second amendment, the following quote by Thomas Jefferson makes very clear what the founders intended with this amendment:
*
“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”
*The founders literally intended for the second amendment to ensure the populace was armed as a deterrent and safe guard against tyrannical government. When you have armed law abiding citizens it also serves a dual purpose as a deterrent against crime and criminals.
I would not mind if I had one, but not you…
Of coarse I would have trouble throwing one far enough and running the other way fast enough to escape the blast.
aaahhhuuummm… OK… let’s stop at something below nuclear bombs. I’ll give you that one…
Sometimes things are bad, not because they are actually bad but because enough think they are bad. Our economy woes are somewhat caused by everyone down in the dumps in spirit.
Obama might fix the economy not by actually fixing it, but by everyone thinking he can.
Something that seems fresh and new, even inexperienced, might just be the ticket.
